Signs That You May Have A Gum Abscess
April 4, 2019We all enjoy a scoop of ice cream or a cup of hot chocolate. But sometimes, we experience tooth pain that occurs while having these hot or cold delights which can ruin the enjoyment. This pain and discomfort can be due to teeth sensitivity.
If you are one of these people who has experienced tooth sensitivity for the first time and want to know everything about it, here is a complete guide to tooth sensitivity.
What Is Tooth Sensitivity?
Tooth sensitivity is very common and treatable. It is a common name for dentin hypersensitivity or root sensitivity. Due to receding gums or enamel erosion, the innermost part of the tooth or dentin (a sensitive layer) under the tooth’s outer layer (enamel) is exposed. When the dentin is exposed, the soft covering (cementum) of the root leaves the dentin root exposed. Hence, any change in the temperature of the mouth can give a shock to the nerve endings, thus resulting in pain or discomfort associated with tooth sensitivity.
Causes of Tooth Sensitivity
Tooth sensitivity can be caused by various factors such as:
- Tooth Decay
Tooth decay or a tooth cavity can be a big reason why you may be having tooth sensitivity. When the decayed tooth is left untreated, it may further cause serious oral problems such as tooth loss.
- Infection
Infections also play an important role in inducing sensitivity. For instance, the combination of plaque and tartar can lead to swelling and redness of the gums, making them prone to gingivitis. It can further lead the tooth to be sensitive to cold and hot foods.
- Improper Brushing
Brushing with too much gusto can lead to the breakdown of enamel. If you are not brushing frequently and properly, it may lead to tooth decay and other oral health problems. Even using a hard-bristled toothbrush causes the weakening of the gums, thus causing tooth sensitivity.
- Bad Eating Habits
Consuming acid-based and processed foods can affect the gums and the tooth. The high acid content present in the foods weaken the enamel and eventually breaks it down.
- Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
Many people are not aware of their teeth grinding and clenching issue while sleeping. People who grind their teeth knowingly or unintentionally have a high risk of having tooth sensitivity as it weakens the enamel.
Solution for Tooth Sensitivity
- Maintain your oral hygiene by brushing at least twice and flossing once a day.
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and use a mouthwash containing a lower percentage of alcohol.
- Drink water after every meal to wash away the food particles stuck at the interdental spaces.
- Consult your dentist before using any teeth whitening products and follow the instructions of the doctor for using it.
- Visit your dentist for regular check-ups, oral cancer screenings, and dental cleanings.

Tooth sensitivity can certainly be managed by a proper oral health regimen and avoiding certain foods from the diet.
