Children's Dentistry

General & Preventative Care

Children should start seeing their dentist within 6 months of their first tooth erupting. When children start seeing a dentist at a young age, they are less likely to be afraid when it comes time for actual treatment. It is important to see a dentist early so that problems are recognized sooner and addressed. Oral habits such as thumb sucking and nail biting can affect the oral cavity. A dentist can also look at the eruption pattern of teeth to check for congenitally missing teeth or other abnormalities in tooth structure.

Sealants & Fluoride

When children start getting their adult molars and premolars, it is important to protect them so that they can last a lifetime. Sealants are designed to seal the grooves in these teeth so food doesn’t get trapped. This will help because children usually lack the dexterity to brush well. Fluoride, when indicated, will also strengthen the enamel to prevent decay.

Stainless Steel Crowns

When a baby tooth has areas of decay, it should be restored with a filling or stainless steel crown. Crowns are needed when the decay is more extensive. These crowns will protect the tooth so that the child can continue to chew the foods they love.

Fillings

Tooth colored or silver fillings can be placed in primary teeth when they have cavities. While many people think that baby teeth are not important because they will eventually fall out, not taking care of them can lead to pain or infection. Cavities found early and fixed can prevent discomfort in your child.

Space Maintainers

If a child needs a tooth pulled because of severe pain or infection, there will be a space left behind. This space can be closed by adjacent teeth tipping in. If this happens before the permanent tooth is close to eruption, the space for the permanent tooth is lost. This new tooth may not have enough space to come out and may come out in a spot it is not supposed to. A cemented space maintainer will keep this space so that alignment and space issues are minimized.

Mouthguard/Sportsguard

If your child plays any sports where there is a chance of trauma, a sportsguard is recommended. A tooth can be damaged or knocked out during these contact sports. A sportsguard is worn over the top teeth so that any impact to them is absorbed to minimize the chance of the teeth being severely hurt.
